The Channel area: the busiest maritime thoroughfare in the world
- 1 vessel every 10 minutes enter or leave the Channel. This represents 20% of the world maritime traffic.
- 361 039 179 tons of freight pass through the Channel ports, of which
194 234 179 tons in the French ports and 166 805 000 tons in the British ports, in 2015.
- 6 ferry companies are active in the Channel area in 2017. 20 to 80 daily ferry
crossings depending on the season.
- 32 853 750 passengers registered in the Channel ports in 2015, of which
16 629 750 on the French side and 16 224 000 on the British side.
- 21.6 million travellers took the Channel Tunnel in 2018 and 22 million tons of
freight passed through it.

The Channel area: population
- In 2019 there were 52 167 988 inhabitants living in the Channel area, of which 24 840 092 on the French side and 27 327 896
on the British side. Altogether this represents 10.2% of the EU population (28 states) or 15.3% of the eurozone (19 states).
- Without Ile-de-France and London Region, there were 31 069 143 inhabitants living in the area in 2019, of which 12 649 328 on the
French side and 18 419 815 on the British side. Altogether this represents 6.1% of the EU population (28 states) or 9.1% of the eurozone (19 states).
- The French population of the area represents 38.3% of the total Metropolitan French
population (19.5% without Ile-de-France).
- The British population of the area represents 41.1% of the total British population (27.7% without London Region)
