Dated history with named heroes begins with Caesar’s first invasion in 55 BC. Although geographically remote from the centre of the Roman Empire, southern Britain and northern Gaul quickly became an integral part of the first European-wide single currency and customs union. Tied together by a network of communications by land and sea, the Roman civilisation depended on the large-scale movement of natural resources and manufactured goods. The spectacular scale of Roman roadworks, urban monuments and fortifications, however, were never fully matched by their systems of agriculture, commerce and industrial production.
